A Special Birthday . . . . . . . ! ! ! ! Yes, on 13th August, it was exactly 5 years since
the village shop first opened it doors to serve the people of our
villages.
Five years on,
the shop continues to be supported by a loyal (and growing) number of
regular customers and a dedicated team of volunteers who undertake many
valuable tasks in order to make the shop a much valued service not only
for Barrowden and Wakerley, but also for several other local
communities.
There have been many changes since
2009, and I am sure that we will see more as the shop continues to
evolve to meet the needs of customers. I do hope that you will continue to support your
village shop, and that we will see you very soon, perhaps to enjoy a
morning coffee or a light lunch in our coffee shop, and to browse our
lovely range of crafts.

Marie Curie "Great Daffodil Appeal" 2014 Thank you so much for your support for our Great Daffodil appeal. For the last three years, our customers have generously supported this worthy cause through the Community Shop. This year we marked the start of the appeal
with a special coffee morning at the shop, on 4th March.
We had a selection of delicious home made cakes from our local baker, and of course fresh ground coffee, fairtrade tea and hot chocolate.
All proceeds from this coffee morning went to Marie Curie, together with donations from the sale of the daffodil brooches.
Thank you again for your support for this worthy charity! Join us next time around.
At the Annual General Meeting held on 26 September 2013, the members voted in a fresh set of Trustee Directors. They are: Angeline Allt, Gill Coleman, Paul Diver, and Phil Wood. They will be communicating with the members later about their ideas for the next stage of the development of the Shop. It is great news that there are four people willing to serve the shop in this capacity in the next chapter of development. They join on-going Director David Bagshaw in moving our Shop on. All nominated as Trustees shared their personal vision for the future of the shop. As well as the elections, there were reports on the shop progress during the year from the Chairman, Sheila Saunders, the Treasurer, Gill Coleman, and the Shop Manager, David Lewis. At the end of the meeting David Bagshaw expressed the thanks of the meeting, and of many others not present, to Sheila for all that she had contributed to the creation of the Shop from dream to reality, and for all that the two most recent grants had made possible over the past two years. Gifts Section in the Coffee Shop We now have a new dresser on the back wall of the coffee shop area. Here we display gifts suitable for all ages, including children. The establishing and opening of our Community Shop is the biggest enterprise our villages have undertaken for a long time. Support your local Shop. Save fuel. Save carbon emissions and help the planet! As well helping to cut down on food miles, we are trying to be net contributors to our global well-being by having solar photo-voltaic panels on the roof. Had you noticed them? This means we can generate the electricity we use ourselves and also contribute to the nation's store of "green" electricity. No coal-burning power stations, no nuclear risks. Simply light. All part of our 21st Century Shop. Look high above the entrance door and a little to the left as you enter to see the screen displaying what we are generating at that moment, how much we have generated since we started and how many tonnes of CO2 we have saved so far. Do you know of other buildings that could do the same? All our volunteers work alongside another volunteer, and probably the Manager as well. Both long-standing residents and new-comers have been delighted to make new friends in this way. Anyone is welcome to join the list of volunteers. Simply mention it next time you are in the Shop. The rota for the next couple of weeks is circulated among volunteers and you can offer according to your other activities. Some have a regular spot, and some are happy to fill in a space. Happily, we have never yet needed to close the Shop for lack of volunteers...... The Barrowden and Wakerley Community Shop was set up as a result of the Parish Plan which urged the provision of a Shop once again. It is staffed entirely by volunteers alongside our full-time Manager, David Lewis. We have easy parking space. Our aim is to provide a first-class shopping experience with high-quality goods at competitive prices for residents of Barrowden and Wakerley and all our nearby villages. We also welcome those passing through our lovely village when walking the Jurassic Way or the Rutland Round or cycling in the area or simply visiting in the area. We are supplied by many small local businesses whose goods you will not find in many other places. We believe our prices are competitive with most other local stores at their regular prices. Come and see for yourself! Remember, you do not need to drive into a town, find a parking place or walk significant distances between car and store. AND here you can also meet up with neighbours, enjoy a cup of coffee, or tea or chocolate, in our friendly bistro, or take it outside to sit in the sunshine, admire our special garden and enjoy Barrowden's fresh air.
